Description
Saint Johns Bridge is a Gothic styled, cable suspension bridge design, that spans the Willamette River. Designed by internationally renowned engineer David B. Steinman and Holton D. Robinson, of New York City. At the time of construction it was the longest suspension-style bridge west of the Mississippi when construction started in September 1029, one month before the Stock Market crash. It was completed in May of 1931 and came in 1 million dollars under budget. Green Peace protestors rappelled down the bridge to keep the MSV Fennica from leaving Portland, because it was destined to help Shell Oil Company drill for oil in the Chukchi Sea.
